Ιερά Μονή Παναγίας κάτω Ξενιάς

The Holy Nunnery of Panagia in Lower Xenia, situated 16 kilometres from the town of Almyros, built on a small plateau with beautiful vegetation and plentiful water.

The exact date of its foundation is unknown. From the bas-reliefs found in the apse of the altar, we conclude that it was established sometime in the 12th and 13th centuries and was initially a dependency of the Upper Monastery of Xenia dedicated to Saint Nicholas.

The wonderworking icon of Panagia of Xenia is tightly linked with the two monasteries and remains a protection and refuge for all the faithful of the region. Beginning in 1704, historic junctures and various needs forced the monks to move and settle in the dependency (metochi) of Saint Nicholas, as we mentioned when describing the Holy Monastery of Upper Xenia. They brought with them holy relics and the wonderworking icon of Panagia of Xenia. As time past, the metochi experienced much spiritual and economic growth and with the title "Lower Monastery of Xenia" it replaced the dominant Upper Monastery which fell into decline. During the wars of emancipation from the Turks, and more recently from the Germans and Italians, the spiritual and social contributions of the Monastery were significant.

Until 1970 the Monastery was a monastery; then it changed to a nunnery and as such remains listed today. In 1980 it was destroyed by an earthquake, resulting in the building of a new Nunnery a small distance from the old one on the hill "Kastrouli". In 1990 the new Nunnery had its door-opening and in 2001 the Church was consecrated, while the work of completing the rest of the buildings continues. The Monastery has its feast day on the 23rd of August, and Panagia' s miraculous grace attracts a large number of faithful from the nearby vicinity and afar.
