Demetrias Ignatius: “prayer for the contemporary martyrs of our faith”. The celebration of St. Panteleimon in Volos and Agia

Saturday, 27 July, 2013

In Volos the celebration took place in the evening with Great Vespers at the Church of St. Panteleimon Orphanage.  Many laity and priests took place in the celebrations along with government officials including the Deputy Minister of Health and a congressman of Magnisia.

During His Sermon His Eminence pointed out the contemporary martyrs we have throughout the world.  He said "...daily, Christians in different places of the world are tortured and are lead to martyrdom only because they are Christians."  He further explained that there are even religions that express hostility toward other religions.  "If a religion says that one can attain paradise through the extermination of another religion, imagine what the faithful could do."

"The answer" He said "to violence is not violence. The answer for us as Christians is to become even more faithful and authentic, better Christians for our home."

His Eminence also mentioned the two Syrians Bishops who were abducted, pointing out that no one knows "if they are captives or have become Martyrs of the faith."

In the morning His Eminence celebrated the Divine Liturgy at the Monastery of St. Panteleimon in Agias.
