Press release 7/6/2016
At the end of this week (specifically from 9 to 11 June 2016) is taking place the 2nd International Musicological and Interdisciplinary Conference of the department of Psaltic Art and Musicology of the Volos Academy for Theological Studies entitled "all together and in the same mood": Proceedings and perspectives of the interdisciplinary research on the Psaltic Art. The conference is held under the auspices of the Holy Metropolis of Demetrias and Almyros, and will take place at the Conference Center of Thessaly in Melissatika, Volos.
The objective of this conference is to discuss the developments of Psaltic Art (of the Byzantine, post-Byzantine, modern and contemporary ecclesiastical music of the Eastern Orthodox Church) as a field of interdisciplinary approach, which retains its self-reliance. The first step taken during the conference of 2014, was an opportunity to stress the need of a comprehensive approach of Psaltic Art. Since then, and throughout the intervening two years, there were a lot of relative positive messages in the Department, while many similar events adopted interdisciplinary terminology or interdisciplinary techniques on the study of Psaltic Art. New ideas are being proposed, while more and more scientific fields are considering of including Byzantine Music in its research tools or to focus on it as a special subject of study. Thus, the expression "all together and in the same mood", which is the motto of this 2nd Conference of the department of Psaltic Art and Musicology of the Volos Academy for Theological Studies, refers to the correlation of the byzantine musicology with other scientific fields and the collaboration of the experts.
About 40 scientists and researchers will participate in the conference with speeches covering a wide range of approaches on Psaltic Art, such as Theology, Philosophy, Social Anthropology of Literature, History, Pedagogy, Psychology, Medicine, Acoustics and Natural Sciences, Mathematics, Computer Science and of course Musicology.
The department of Psaltic Art and Musicology of the Volos Academy for Theological Studies started operating in September 2013. Its main objectives include the musicological research of all forms of music related to religious worship and especially to Psaltic Art of the Orthodox Christianity and the so-called Byzantine tradition. This department's director is Konstantinos Charil. Karagounis, who is an Assistant Professor of the Supreme Ecclesiastical Academy of Athens.
